Observing the sound and movement outside the classroom window, we asked: Who do we work with, play with, learn with?
Integrated Learning:
Unit of study includes Observation and Documentation, Literacy, Language, and Expressive Skills, Art, Spacial Awareness, Graphing, Storytelling.
Skills:
-Scientific observation and documentation of the city
-Direct experience with the city, its architecture, transportation, and people
-Sensory exploration of the city
-Artistic expression of different aspects of city
-Artistic expression of children’s selves, and how they see themselves in the city
-Utilizing graphing skills
-Experience with imaginative storytelling
-Songs, stories, poems focusing on city life
Learning activities:
-Create observational drawings of the city outside the windows
-Revisit drawings, adding specific details (incorporating people, buildings, streets)
-Observational and representational easel drawings, utilizing a wide variety of media (paint, oil pastels, pencils, markers, crayons, watercolors)
-Engage in self-portraits of selves in city
-Dictation of stories about self-portraits
-Observation and documentation of sights, sounds, and smells in city
-Create mixed media sculptures of city
-Paint sculptures
-Charting of transportation used by students to arrive at school
-Neighborhood walk, and a visit to a local restaurant
-Books, songs, poems about city life
-Gross motor skills games
